Portnadler Bay, Sunset
Portnadler Bay, Sunset

Whilst having lunch in the garden of our holiday cottage earlier that day I had reasoned that there was a good chance of a decent sunset judging by the high wispy cirrus cloud overhead. This was not my first choice for a possible location. That was a bay a few miles around the coast but on arrival there it was immediately obvious that although it looked promising on a map wasn't going to make the best of what was to come.

We had already visited another part of this bay earlier that week so we headed here as fast as we could hoping there would be the kind of rocky foreground I had in mind. Access down to this part of the cove from the cliff is via an uninviting kissing gate that can easily be overlooked.

Fortunately I still had some time before sunset arrived and spent ages choosing a position amongst the rocks that worked compositionally. The exposure time was 0.6 second but the entire photographic thought process took about 8 hours from start to finish. It often doesn't come together this well but it is a great feeling when it does.
