Kingswood Bluebells
Kingswood Bluebells

Most bluebells images don't so much depict bluebells but rather a carpet of bluebell colour with the flowers too small to see in any detail. But I wanted to create an image with good bold foreground interest by getting the camera as low and close as I could.

The problem with bluebells however is that the closer you get to them the sparser they appear. Finding a composition that works is really difficult. This is the third year in a row that I have been to these woods searching for this kind of image and this is the only one that has worked. Yet, there is still plenty of room for improvement. Maybe next year.

In order to get everything in focus from the bluebells a few inches away to the distant trees I would have needed to use a large f stop number of perhaps f16 or f18. A larger f stop number counterintuitively gives a smaller aperture. A smaller f stop like f4 would give a larger aperture. Just to confuse those starting out.
